“Ahh...the backgrounds, the rooms, enchanting little vignettes. What an artist brings to life in an environment is the vision
of the game developer and the artist together. To capture the intended view requires the constant and close working team
of both parties, and a successful collaboration is a most satisfying arrangement, critical to the success of overall
game coherance.
‘In 16 color Adventure/RPGs (role playing games) the backgrounds occupied a small section of the screen, along with the text
required to play the game. That allotted space grew with MCGA when the palette jumped to 256 colors, giving game artists a
wee bit more room to play. When Photoshop (version 2.5 for me) joined the toolset, the ability to work with millions of colors in
24 bit pushed the visuals further than they ever had. Even with having to index them back down to 256 colors, the art
stayed true to the original version, with very little change, much to the delight of the artist.
’A selection of my background art above shows 16 colors (8 bit) to millions of colors (24bit indexed down to 256 colors).”
